The grounds surrounding Birtley House provide a serene setting for the Nursing Home and Mews. The eight acres of formal gardens incorporate easy-access paths to allow our less mobile Residents to enjoy much of the gardens and there is an on-going programme of installing additional pathways to facilitate further access. Throughout the gardens there are many seats which provide a place to rest or to simply sit and enjoy the view. The 'rooms' within the garden include a Rose Garden, the Secret Garden, an Orchard, a pond with Koi Carp, and the Kitchen Garden.
The grounds, extending to a further 40 acres, include a lake stocked with Brown trout for fly-fishing, a cider-apple orchard and woodland. The woodland is actively managed and the Geese in the cider-apple orchard help keep the weeds at bay. The Kitchen Garden and Orchard provide a wide variety of salad crops, fruit, vegetables, cut-flowers and pot-plants for the home. Much of the seasonable produce is incorporated into the Residents' menus while surplus is made into a range of Birtley preserves and chutneys. Surrey Beekeepers manage a set of hives which produce Birtley Honey.
Maintaining and encouraging an interest in the outside world is a vital part of the ethos of life at Birtley House. As some Residents are no longer able to visit the outside community we endeavour to bring the community to them instead, which helps to ensure a varied and balanced lifestyle for all.
In addition to small indoor and outdoor events, which are usually incorporated into the monthly Activities programme, we hold a few larger events in the grounds providing a continuous source of interest for our Residents and opportunities to enjoy these with their families and friends.
The Surrey Hills Sculpture Garden is held annually during May within the gardens (2018 dates: TBA). The exhibition showcases both local up and coming sculptors, along with those who are nationally renowned. The annual Surrey Hills Wood Fair was held in the grounds in October (2018 dates: TBA). Our Residents love joining in with all the fun of the fair.
The Estate is managed by Birtley Brook Estate LLP and further information can be found on their website.
