Next upcoming exhibition:
Inspiration in the garden with local glass sculptor and artist, Adam Aaronson. We're delighted in our latest collaboration with Adam, to bring arts and inspiration into our residents garden. Adam's work is exceptionally thought provoking, calming, peaceful and inspirational all at the same time. The key focus of this exhibition is to raise funds for local charity 'halow project', through a closed bid auction on Adam's 'Boundaries' piece, which has been brought together through a collaboration of donated words which encourage inspiration, hope and creativity.

We've always had huge community involvement at Birtley House, and now we're branching out further with this by inviting in local businesses from around the rural Surrey Hills to work in our woodland. They will be practicing their skills and running courses which will be offered to the public.
Many of our residents will also benefit from the skills which can be taken into the home, and some will be able to have stone carving, willow weaving or art lessons in the gardens whilst enjoying new company.
Let us introduce you to some of our artisans…
The Surrey Hills Adventure Company, aka SHAC
The team behind SHAC are a group of passionate outdoor professionals with a wealth of knowledge and skills to offer. Their new site on the Birtley Estate opened at Easter, and has been set up primarily to provide adventure days for kids between the ages of 6 to 12 years old. The beautiful and natural setting allows the children to learn new skills, including taking educated risks, making new friends and experiencing a digital detox time, all beneficial to both the mental and physical aspects of a child’s health and wellbeing.
SHAC’s field of expertise are Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Open Water Swimming, Children’s Holiday Adventure Camps and outdoor learning, Mountain Biking, Bushcraft and Team Building. As their time progresses on the Birtley House Estate, so will their offerings, including established activities for adults.

Learn traditional Woodworking principles with Mervyn
The management of Birtley Woodland generates timber which is mostly used to heat Birtley House. Excess timber however, leaves enough for Mervyn, our skilled carpenter to create some stunning pieces of handmade furniture.
Mervyn is highly experienced in his field and runs specialist Woodworking courses for those interested in experiencing traditional and historic Woodworking principles. With guidance and Mervyn’s professional know how, you can fashion your very own items large and small, inspired by the beautiful woodland location. No previous experience necessary.

Bee Keeping courses
This collaboration with Birtley House brings the opportunity to offer training to both potential and new beekeepers. There will be an initial two courses in late Spring/early Summer and also a Taster Day in July for non-beekeepers. Training continues through to the autumn as all members can attend on a Saturday when we carry out husbandry of the hives/bees. Courses fill up quickly, and the next course intake will be confirmed later in the summer.
A Holistic Forest School Experience
Lee Davis, a qualified Level 3 Forest School Leader, will join us later this summer and will bring a wide range of learning opportunities for children in their early years. His Forest School will allow them to learn not only new physical skills, but research has shown it helps them to work with others, problem solve and manage their own risk.
“With over 7 years’ experience in Early Years childcare, as well as a BA (Hons) degree in Early Years Management and Practice, I have nurtured my passion for working with children and I’m delighted to now be able to deliver their education, in the form of an outdoors learning school. I am acutely aware of how much impact our input into children’s early development has. In a world that is becoming more and more digitally focused, I believe that children deserve, and should be given the opportunity to switch their attention to more achievable, child initiated tasks which will take place outdoors, where possible in a woodland environment.”
