Another glorious week in the garden with temperatures reaching the mid to high teens making the washout of the previous months a distant memory.
The final lawns had their annual weed, feed and mosskiller applied and with the warm weather and moisture that is still in the ground will start to grow rapidly and green up nicely for the early spring.
In the vegetable garden we continued to mulch some of the beds and clear away the last of the brassicas. We have also begun taking our produce down to the shop 'Bramley’s Apple' in the village and are proving a great success with the customers.
In the cider orchard we got took advantage of the weather and got an early weed-kill spray done and also started to re-stake some of the trees that have been ‘windrocked’ loose over the winter months. The cider is also nearly ready to be bottled so we’ll keep you informed as to when you’ll be able to sample Birtley House’s first attempt at cider making.
With Halloween celebrations growing each year in the UK, our Birtley House activities team decided to really embrace it this year and make the most of our own home grown pumpkins.
