Creating Joy with the Carousel Theatre Company

As the Marketing Manager for Birtley House Nursing Home, a big part of my job is capturing what goes on around the Care Home, whilst highlighting the positive influences our stimulating and interactive activities have on our Residents happiness and well-being. I can genuinely say that when I see our Nursing Home Residents smiling and laughing as they are here, it really melts my heart and is such a pleasure to witness. These pictures capture the joy and happiness experienced in the activities lounge yesterday, when we invited a cabaret ‘Puppet Show’ into our Nursing Home, produced by the Carousel Theatre Company.

This type of activity with traditional entertainment and essentially, toys, can be very nostalgic. Many of our Care Home residents will have played with puppets as a child, and no doubt grew up in an era where theatre productions were one of the main forms of entertainment.

The Swan Ballet was my particular favourite (head to the Birtley house Nursing Home Facebook and Instagram for short videos) as the creative choreography in their finale was both surprising and hilarious. The Carousel Theatre Company entertained us with singing, dancing, puppet bust ups, jokes and puppet memes, all which caused the room to erupt with laughter, myself included. At the end they finished with a quick lesson on how some of the puppets were made, how they work, their names and ages, and why we should have such an appreciation for them. The mix of content delivered from the Carousel Theatre Company was both interesting, funny and stimulating and contrary to my initial thoughts, I really enjoyed the show and came away a little richer in my knowledge of the history of puppets.

Special thanks to our activities Co-ordinator Caroline Whalley, who goes out of her way to make sure these afternoons are so varied and stimulating to cater to the variety of needs that we care for at Birtley House.
