Ruth Wheeler, an artist involved with Community Arts Projects, came to Activities last week to include Residents in the production of postcards from 'around the world' to be exhibited on a willow globe at the Golden Years Festival, which is being held at Birtley House on Tuesday 15th September 2015.
The RIPE Project (Researching Interventions that Promote Ethics in Social care) is being run by the University of Surrey. The aim of the project is to evaluate different approaches to ethics education with staff working in residential care homes for older people. Care Homes involved in the project are assigned to one of three type of 'intervention group' or to a control group.
During a recent Activities session, Robert Grimmond brought a number of unusual objects for Residents to identify. The Residents worked in teams and managed to get most of the answers correct, although some were just too challenging, even though some interesting suggestions were given!
Birtley House had a very exciting evening on Friday 23rd January with Jeremy Hunt, our local MP and Secretary of State for Health, and Anne Milton, MP for Guildford presenting the first Elizabeth Care certificates, following a course at the University of Surrey, to six successful candidates including our own Lead Carer Ola Szychulska.
Last week a reporter and photographer from the Guardian visited Birtley to find our more about the Elizabeth Nurse and Carer course.
On Friday 21st November, seven members of staff represented Birtley House at the Surrey Care Association Awards dinner held at Epsom Race Course, where we were awarded 'Runner Up' in the category 'involving friends, family and community', which is awarded to a provider showing enthusiasm, innovation and determination to fulfill the criteria.
The National Skills Academy for Social Care is committed to excellent adult social care in England. They are a membership organisation, created by social care employers to transform the quality of leadership, management, training, development, and commissioning.
They selected just two homes in England, which exemplify excellent care, to feature in a film which will be shown at the National Care Conference in the autumn - of course, Birtley House was one of those two homes.
Care Quality Commission inspections can be scheduled or unannounced. On 3rd November we had an unannounced inspection and the following is an excerpt from the report:
People expressed their views and were involved in making decisions about their care and support. We spoke with three people who told us they were very happy at Birtley House. They said they had regular meetings with the manager and key staff to discuss and agree their care and support needs. These were subsequently recorded in people's care plans together with information about people's preferences. One person told us "I do have choice about how I spend my day". Another person said "the staff are very kind and they make sure I am comfortable".
Thanks to the tremendous response from Residents', their families and staff for contributions towards the shoebox appeal, we were able to fill 30 boxes last Thursday 31st October 2013, with a second afternoon scheduled this week (7th November 2013), when we expect to pack at least another 15 boxes! There was a wonderful atmosphere as everyone happily chose the items to pack while wondering which little girl or boy would be receiving their box in time for Christmas.
