After winning the Great British Care Awards South East regional finals last year, we are over the moon to announce that we won ‘Highly Commended’ at the National Great British Care Awards (GBCA) last month. With twenty-one categories up for grabs representing the areas of social care, the competition was rather fierce with some National worthy winners. The GBCA awards represent the sheer excellence that individuals bring 365 days a year to the care community. Whether that be frontline workers, volunteers, care managers or carers providing training for the health and social care sector, all dedicated workers deserve to be recognised for their hard work and efforts.
A Highly Commendable Care Home Manager
The main event of the evening was when our Registered Manager, Sylwia Indycka received the ‘Highly Commended’ award within the Care Home Registered Manager category. Sylwia was the only ‘Highly Commended’ person in her category therefore, incredibly she was the national runner-up. She worked super hard to get this far in the GBCA awards after successfully winning the regional finals last year and then getting through an interview with three judges for the Nationals. It’s a tough challenge but is all worthwhile to showcase the achievements of our Birtley House community.
After her win, Sylwia received the following charming comments from the panel “Bright, bubbly and fun. She portrays leadership skills in everything she does and leads by inspiring her team, ensuring work-life balance for her staff, refers to herself as being an acrobat due to having to juggle so many tasks. She understands the importance of providing a safe and effective service to all her residents and ensures total compliance in all areas; a positive and innovative approach to new ideas for both residents and staff.”

The residents are so grateful for all Sylwia does at Birtley and to show their gratitude they signed a good luck card and made a hat to wish Sylwia luck in one of their activities and wellbeing afternoons. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the activity using their art and craft skills utilising an array of bright colours to make the hat stand out for Sylwia’s special evening. Sylwia loved the hat and mentioned that she will cherish it for years to come.
