Activities & Wellbeing...

Our dedicated activities team play a vital role in the care of our residents. Members of the Birtley team are available five days a week and each morning they serve coffee to residents individually, therefore presenting the opportunity to get to know one another before joining them for the daily activity. It’s also a nice reminder for residents of what is going on in the house that day, and helps to encourage engagement.

Daily Birtley Activities

No day is the same at Birtley House for our much-loved residents. Activities range from talks by guest speakers, musical afternoons, arts and crafts, arm-chair yoga, cookery, word-games and quizzes to the celebration of anniversaries and dates of special interest and significance.

Occasionally, residents and staff have given talks or demonstrations themselves, if they have had a particular interest or hobby which they wished to share with others.

Monthly Activities Programme

In addition to the daily programme, there are regular monthly activities including film shows, book club and visits from our P.A.T (Pets as Therapy) dog Ambrose.

Residents will from time to time also form their own clubs which have in the past included Bridge, Knitting, Rummicub and Scrabble.

Please take a look at our current and previous activities calendars below:

Additional regular monthly activities

Additional ad-hoc activities are organised by the Care Assistants at any time throughout the 24hr day, to suit the requirements of the Resident. By their very nature, such activities do not follow a regular timetable and range widely in content e.g.

  • Watch a match on the TV with a fellow rugby enthusiast
  • Eat Fish & Chips at the local chippy
  • Go on an outing to watch a local show, theatre production or pantomime
  • Sit and chat in the grounds with a cup of tea or iced speciality on a warm summers day
  • Enjoy a trip to the seaside

Activities tailored to the individual

We’re always eager to make Resident’s dreams come true wherever possible, so much so that we implemented our ‘Wish Tree’ to encourage more fulfilled life experiences. Once a wish has been granted, we mark the occasion by hanging a decoration on a designated tree outside.
