The Estate...

The grounds surrounding Birtley House provide a serene setting for the Nursing Home and Mews. The eight acres of formal gardens incorporate easy-access paths to allow our less mobile Residents to enjoy much of the gardens and there is an on-going programme of installing additional pathways to facilitate further access. Throughout the gardens there are many seats which provide a place to rest or to simply sit and enjoy the view. The ‘rooms’ within the garden include a Rose Garden, the Secret Garden, an Orchard, a pond with Koi Carp, and the Kitchen Garden.

A Nursing Home with a difference

The grounds, extending to a further 40 acres, include a lake stocked with trout for fly-fishing and an-apple orchard with around 700 trees producing cider which is distilled locally to make Beorc Leah Birtley Apple Brandy. The woodland is actively managed by The Birtley Estate. Various local businesses practice traditional woodworking crafts, stone carving, arts, yoga, bushcraft and much more. Most of these artisans bring their craft into the care home for our residents from time to time, offering further unique experiences.

The Kitchen Garden provides a wide variety of salad crops, fruit, vegetables, cut flowers and pot plants for the home. Much of the seasonal produce is incorporated into the residents’ menus while the surplus is made into a range of Birtley House preserves and chutneys. Surrey Beekeepers manage a set of hives which produce Birtley House Honey.

Events at Birtley House

In addition to small indoor and outdoor events, that are usually incorporated into the monthly Activities programme, we hold a few larger events in the grounds that provide a continuous source of interest for our residents as well as opportunities to enjoy with their families and friends. Past events include the Surrey Hills Sculpture Garden Exhibition in the garden throughout the whole of May, followed by the Surrey Hills Autumn Woodfair. Various other events include Rare Plant Fairs, Picnic’s, Concerts and much more, all of which bring new people and further opportunities for our residents to explore and enjoy the grounds.

Aside from these joyous events giving our residents frequent community interaction and opportunity on their doorstep, it is another reason to be proud of their home.

Maintaining and encouraging an interest in the outside world is a vital part of the person centred care home life experienced at Birtley House. As some residents are no longer able to visit the outside community, we endeavour to bring the community to them instead, helping to ensure an interesting, varied and balanced lifestyle for all.
