Family Business...

Birtley House Nursing Home is owned and managed by a family company founded in 1932 by Dr. Lloyd Driver and his wife Joan. Now into their fourth generation the day to day running of the business remains to be overseen by Dr. Driver's grandson and great grandchildren in the Whalley family who all have an active role in a resident's experience of Birtley House.

The Whalley Family

In the 1950’s the management was passed to the Drivers’ daughter, June, and her husband Dick Whalley.

The business is now owned and managed by Simon Whalley, the eldest of June and Dick’s four children, his wife Caroline, their two sons, Frank and Tim, and Frank’s wife Sinead. All family members take an active involvement in the daily activities within both the nursing home and the wider Birtley House community.

Simon Whalley, Chairman

The eldest grandson of Dr Lloyd Driver, Simon Whalley was born at Birtley House and has been a Director of the business since 1968. His objective in the business has always been to maintain the ethos of a family home whilst continuing to provide the highest levels of care, for each individual resident in accordance with their needs.

A key part of Simon’s role is to ensure that the home is fully engaged with the community so that the residents of Birtley House continue to get the stimuli of normal life and that the wider community recognise the importance of good care. Simon also maintains active engagement with national and local organisations and public sector bodies including Care England, Surrey Care Association, the Community Foundation for Surrey and Surrey Hills Enterprise CIC. Sharing experiences and learning from others is fundamental to his commitment to ensuring that the best care is provided to older people with multiple and complex conditions.

Caroline Whalley, Director

Caroline’s principal interest is ensuring that a good quality of life is maintained through a sense of belonging within the Birtley House community, and social well-being with other residents and their families by offering opportunities to participate in a variety of activities. Caroline gets to know residents and their family members closely and helps to make sure that people are connected well to feel fully supported.

Frank Whalley, Director

Frank is the first point of contact for all prospective residents and their relatives, and an introductory visit to Birtley House would usually be conducted with him. This helps to ensure that the understandings of our family-run ethos are placed at the beginning of each person’s journey with us. Frank works closely with his brother Tim to oversee the operational side of the business, and also with the Finance Manager and Registered Manager to ensure that all departments are run efficiently so as to offer value for money in the business, whilst ensuring that it is compliant with regulations.

Tim Whalley, Director & Nominated Individual

Tim is responsible for ensuring the whole property, including the grounds and gardens are safe and secure. He works to ensure we are as energy efficient as possible and able to adapt to the needs of modern nursing within the Birtley historic house. At the same time, Tim strives to create an uplifting environment that promotes health and well-being, and is, alongside the other parts of the organisation, fully engaged with the wider community.

Sinead Whalley, Resident Liaison Director

Sinead is married to Frank Whalley. With her Northern Irish heritage, Sinead is naturally charming, warm and welcoming. Her role is predominantly to help all residents settle in as quickly as possible. Sinead assists with the coordination of necessary paperwork and will visit each resident on the day of their arrival to introduce herself and make sure they are comfortable and happy. She is the initial point of contact for the resident’s family members too, should they have questions about various things.
